Night portraits / Neon — Barcelona

It's the most common worry and the answer is no, when it's done right. I use gear that performs at night and a small portable light to softly lift your face, so you stay sharp and well exposed while the city behind brings its atmosphere. Any small amount of noise is controlled in editing without turning skin to plastic. The result is a clean image, with the night present but without darkness swallowing you.

Ideally we start in the blue hour, that twenty- or thirty-minute stretch just after sunset when the sky still holds a deep blue and the city lights are already on. It gives the best balance between background and face. Since that window shifts with the season, I confirm the start time a few days ahead. Then we continue into full night, which gives the most cinematic frames with lamps and neon.

It depends on the style you want. If you're after something intimate and atmospheric, the stone lanes of the Gothic Quarter and El Born at night, nearly empty and lit by warm lamps, are unbeatable. If you prefer urban glamour with lights and façades, Passeig de Gràcia and the Casa Batlló area. And if you want the whole city glowing behind you, we head up to the Bunkers del Carmel. In one session we can combine two nearby areas; I'll suggest the best route based on your look and the time.

Yes. I know the areas and the timing well, so we choose calm, well-lit routes, avoiding the busiest or trickier spots at certain hours. I'm with you the whole time and keep an eye on the gear. At the Bunkers, which are in a park, we plan to arrive and come down with enough light and by the usual path. The idea is for you to focus on enjoying the session without worrying about anything else.
