Gran Canaria: a continent in miniature

Gran Canaria is known as "the continent in miniature" for concentrating radically different landscapes in 1,560 km²: Sahara-style dunes at Maspalomas, Canarian pine forests in central peaks (1,500-1,900m), deep canyons like Tejeda, green northern coast with banana plantations, arid southern coast like North Africa, and colonial historic urban center in Las Palmas (Vegueta).

Gran Canaria's climate is exceptional: constant 18-26°C year-round on southern coast, no brutal vertical summer hours like peninsular Spain, no Atlantic rain like northern Spain. This means practically any month works for outdoor photography with near-total certainty — unique advantage in Spain.

For photography Gran Canaria is Canaries' best quality-price combination: more affordable than Tenerife (10-20%), similar microclimate variety but more compact. Especially recommended for destination wedding with contained budget, families with kids (resorts), and all-in-one sessions (dunes + forest + coast) in same day.

Best photo spots in Gran Canaria

Maspalomas Dunes: 400 hectares of Sahara-style dunes by the sea. Free access. For compositions unique in Europe — the only place to photograph desert with palm trees and ocean in same frame. Best sunrise (no people) or blue hour. No permit for couples, special permit for larger production.

Roque Nublo: 80m basalt monolith in island center (1,813m). 30-min hike from parking. For "Spain meets Easter Island" look. Best sunset when it lights up golden with ocean backdrop.

Puerto de Mogán ("Little Venice"): fishing village with canals, white houses with bougainvilleas. For "Mediterranean village" look without peninsular coast crowding. Best 9:00-11:00 or 17:30-19:30.

Vegueta (Las Palmas Old Town): cradle of America's discovery (Christopher Columbus passed here 1492). Canarian-Andalusian colonial architecture. For "Latin Spain" look. Free access.

Tejeda: mountain village with views of Roque Bentayga and Roque Nublo. Declared one of Spain's most beautiful villages. Free access.

Playa de las Canteras (Las Palmas): 3km urban beach, one of Europe's best urban beaches. For lifestyle/family sessions with "Mediterranean beach city" look.

Barranco de Guayadeque: troglodyte valley with inhabited cave houses. For "authentic rural Spain" look, very under-photographed.

"Photos on the Maspalomas dunes with the grandparents visiting. We got up early for the good light and it was totally worth it. Unforgettable."
