Cordoba: the Mosque-Cathedral, unique in the world
Cordoba offers the Mosque-Cathedral — the world's only building where 16th-century Christian cathedral is literally built inside the 9th-century caliphal mosque. The 856 columns with red-white arches create one of Europe's most photographed interiors, comparable only to the Roman Pantheon or Hagia Sophia.
Beyond the Mosque-Cathedral, Cordoba offers unique compositions: the Patios Festival (May, UNESCO Heritage) where private houses open their flowered patios to the public; the Jewish Quarter with white-washed streets; the Roman Bridge (1st century BC) over the Guadalquivir with the Mosque backdrop at sunset.
Cordoban light is Andalusia's warmest after Seville — autumn-winter-spring sunset golden hour is exceptionally long (40-50 minutes). But like Seville, summer (July-August) is brutal with 40-45°C and impossible sessions between 11:00-19:00.
Best photo spots in Cordoba
Mosque-Cathedral (interior): the forest of columns with bicolor arches. Standard €13 entry, non-commercial photography allowed without flash or tripod. Best 8:30-10:00 before tour groups. For commercial use: Cabildo Catedralicio permit, €2,500-6,000, 60 days.
