How a surprise proposal shoot works

Before the day we settle everything by message: the time, where you'll arrive from and a small signal — taking off your sunglasses, reaching into a pocket — that tells me the moment has come. Your partner won't notice a thing.

I arrive early, set up at a distance with a telephoto lens and blend in with any tourist taking in the view. In busy spots like the Bunkers del Carmel or Park Güell, nobody notices one more person with a camera. By the time you give the signal, I'm already shooting.

After the yes I step out to congratulate you and, if you'd like, we do a relaxed twenty- or thirty-minute mini-session nearby, ring already on and nerves dissolved into laughter. That way you get both: the stolen instant and a set of beautiful portraits to remember it by.

Where, when and what you receive

Every couple has its place. The Bunkers del Carmel give you all of Barcelona at your feet at sunset, dramatic and panoramic. Park Güell wraps the proposal in Gaudí's mosaic and forms, colourful and unique. La Barceloneta brings the sea, golden sand and a barefoot, bright air. And the alleys of the Gòtic, early in the morning, offer old stone and intimacy for something more tucked away.

Light leads. The golden hour just before sunset is the magic window, especially at the Bunkers; in summer sunrise works just as well, with the locations empty. Spring and early autumn give the best balance of clear skies, mild temperatures and calm.

How do you stay hidden so my partner doesn't suspect anything?
I arrive before you and position myself fifteen to forty metres away with a telephoto lens, dressed like any tourist. In spots like the Bunkers del Carmel or Park Güell, full of people with cameras looking at the views, I go completely unnoticed. We agree in advance on where you'll arrive from so I have the sun and background in my favour, and a discreet signal from you marks the start. Your partner only sees you.
Park Güell has paid entry. How do we handle that?
The monumental zone of Park Güell, with the iconic mosaics, requires a timed ticket, so we book it in advance for the two of you and I coordinate it with the best light window. There are also free-access parts of the park with beautiful views if we prefer to skip the ticket. As a no-entry alternative with a spectacular panorama, the Bunkers del Carmel are perfect. I explain the options at booking and we choose together.
What happens right after the yes?
I give you a couple of minutes to yourselves — the hug, the tears, the first phone calls — while still shooting from a distance, because that's where the most genuine reactions are. Then I come over, congratulate you and, if you feel like it, we do a calm twenty- to thirty-minute mini-session around the area. With the surprise over, relaxed and with the ring on, that's when the portraits you'll want to frame appear.
