We work within a small radius, with seats at hand and frequent pauses. If needed, I carry all the gear and only ask you to settle wherever you're comfortable. The grandparents' comfort is priority number one.

The secret is to take the big photo first, when everyone is fresh and attentive, and to shoot several in a row to have a choice. With children I use games and sounds so they look at just the right moment, and if in one frame someone blinks or gets distracted, I usually have another good one beside it. Among them all, that image where the whole family is perfect always appears.

The key is to choose a palette of three or four colours that go together — say earth tones, muted blue and cream — and have each person dress within that range in their own way. That way the group looks harmonious without seeming uniformed. Avoid big logos and very strong prints.
