Eloping, in Barcelona

An elopement is a wedding stripped to the essentials: the two of you, the words that truly matter and a place worthy of them. No guest list, no protocol, no stress. Just the day you've chosen to live your own way — and someone to document it as the small film it is.

Barcelona is an unusual city for this because it blends three worlds within a few kilometres: Gaudí's modernism, the medieval stone old town and the Mediterranean inside the city. You can exchange vows on a rooftop with the Sagrada Família behind you and finish barefoot on the sand at sunset, all in the same afternoon.

My role is both invisible and total: I look after the rhythm, the light and the moments so that you only have to be present with each other.

The arc of the day and where it happens

We usually design the day as a small journey across the city. We start early, when the Gothic Quarter and El Born are empty and the stone has the clean morning light, perfect for intimate vows in an alley or a hidden courtyard. Then we head up to the Bunkers del Carmel or a rooftop for a panorama of the whole of Barcelona, and close with the Mediterranean: sunset over the sand at Bogatell or Barceloneta.

If you want the modernist signature, Park Güell and the Gaudí backdrops on Passeig de Gràcia bring that colour and texture only this city has. We chain two or three settings by metro or car, all ten to thirty minutes apart.

Through the day I barely direct: I give you a cue, a place to walk, and shoot what truly happens — the nervous laugh, the long hug, the tears reading the vows. At the end we make a few more careful portraits in the best light of the day.

Season, coverage and budget

Barcelona works all year, but May, June, September and October give the best mix of clear skies, mild temperatures and less crowded locations. Summer is hot and very busy, so in July and August we plan for sunrise or late afternoon. The golden hour at sunset over the hills and sea is the strong moment of the day.

An elopement isn't billed by a loose hour but by project, because every day is different: number of locations, transport between them, whether there's a symbolic ceremony with a celebrant, a second outfit change or half-day versus full-day coverage. I make a fixed proposal based on what you picture, with no surprises.

You receive a generous digital gallery of edited high-resolution photos, delivered within 5 to 10 days, ready to share and print. It can be extended with video, drone where permitted, hair and make-up or help with the celebrant and paperwork — we settle that at booking.

FAQ

How is an elopement different from a normal couple session?
A couple session is portraits of you in one or two locations over one or two hours. An elopement is coverage of a real day: you dress as a married couple, there's a ceremony or vow reading, we move through several settings and the whole day is documented as a story, not just a few photos. That's why it takes more time, more locations and is planned by project.
Do you help organise the ceremony and permits?
Yes. Although my work is the photography, I know the city and can connect you with celebrants for a symbolic ceremony, suggest rooftops and spaces where shooting is allowed, and flag which public locations need a booking or permit. If you want a legal marriage in Spain there's prior paperwork worth starting early, and I point you to where to begin, though the legal side is handled by a third party.
How many locations fit in one day?
Half a day comfortably covers two settings; a full day, three or even four. Barcelona's advantage is that old town, panoramic viewpoint and beach are ten to thirty minutes apart, so the day isn't lost to transfers. We design the route around the light: stone and streets early, panorama at midday and the sea at sunset.
What if it's just the two of us, with no guests?
That's exactly the essence of the elopement and where it works best. With no guests everything is freer: we change plans on the fly, linger where the light is magical, and you behave naturally because there's no audience. If at some point you want a couple of witnesses or close family, they fit in easily; but the just-the-two-of-you version usually gives the most honest images.
