The first birthday is celebrated only once, and this format turns it into images full of colour and energy: the look of surprise at seeing the cake, the first finger in the sponge, the happy chaos that follows.
My job is to set up a pretty, safe scene, and then let the child do what they do best at that age: explore, get messy and laugh while I capture every moment.
How we set the session up
The most practical is in studio or at home, with a clean backdrop, a cake suited to their age and matching décor with balloons and details in a palette chosen with you. The floor is well protected so the child can let loose without worry and the cleanup afterwards is easy.
I usually split the session in two: first some portraits of the birthday child dressed up and clean, with their pretty décor, and then comes the star moment — the cake. There I direct nothing: I let them explore it, squash it and bring it to their mouth while I shoot the happy chaos. If you fancy, we finish with a bubble session or a little bath that makes adorable photos.
I work to the child's rhythm, with patience and lots of play. If they need a break, we take one. The idea is for them to have a good time; the best photos come from exactly that.
When, how long it lasts and what you receive
The classic time is around the first birthday, when the baby already sits up alone but isn't walking too much yet; between eleven and thirteen months is perfect. As it's almost always indoors, the date is flexible and doesn't depend on Seville's heat, though in summer you'll be grateful for the studio or a cool home.
It's best to schedule the session at a time when the child is awake and in a good mood, usually mid-morning after their nap and breakfast. The session lasts about an hour, as long as a one-year-old's attention and energy hold well.
