Whichever you prefer. I can take care of the cake within the package, choosing colours that match the set and a soft, safe sponge for a one-year-old. Or you bring it if you have a trusted bakery or want a specific theme. The only thing that matters is that it's easy to smash and age-appropriate — nothing too hard or with ingredients the little one hasn't tried.

It happens more than you'd think and it's no problem at all. Some babies dive right in and others eye the cake with suspicion. If they don't want to, I don't force it: I give them time, the parents come closer, sometimes one touches the cake first to show it's allowed. And if they still aren't interested, the photos of their doubtful little face in front of the cake are adorable. The session works just as well; we adapt to their mood.

That's the best part: we close with a bubble bath. I set up a small transparent tub with warm water and foam, and the little one cleans up while playing as I keep taking lovely photos. It's very photogenic and solves the cleanup in one go. Bring a change of clothes and their towel; I take care of the rest of the mess, so don't worry about getting things dirty.

Before bringing out the cake we take some portraits of the little one nicely dressed, groomed and calm, with the decorated set behind: balloons, garland and the chosen colours. They're the cleanest, most elegant first-birthday photos, perfect to print or give the grandparents. Then comes the fun chaos. That way you get the best of both worlds in a single session.
